“I was a product of my environment.” That’s what De’Ron Smith says, an expert intervention consultant. Smith, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, confesses that his environment as an inner-city kid greatly influenced the decisions he made. Unfortunately, they were usually the wrong ones. At the age of 7 he took his first drink, smoked his first joint at 11, and by the time he was 13 had done his first line of cocaine.

However, this was only the beginning. He would later battle a 10-year crack addiction, homelessness, and countless jail terms. He peaked when he became one of the most well-known drug dealers in the city, only to learn that he could potentially receive a 20-year prison sentence.

That’s when everything changed.

      Inspiring book about life's challenges

This is a very inspirational story about overcoming life's obstacles. De'Ron Smith has had it all but allowed the streets to lure him in. As is most often the case, his criminal and addictive behavior resulted in near death experiences. As the saying goes - dead or in jail - De'Ron became a ward of the state for eight years. Determined to succeed, De'Ron turned his life around and now serves as an inspirational speaker and helps young people. De'Rons perseverance should serve as a model for troubled young people. No matter how bad it gets, you can turn your life around. I highly recommend this inspiring story, especially for young adults considering life on the streets. De'Ron's story will show that the street life is like a crap game, most people don't win. Keep rolling the dice, you will crap out and end up dead or in jail.

Raw portrayal of vulnerability and redemption

De’Ron’s vulnerability is an inspiration creating a work of art.

Just as an artist uses layers, texture, and contrast to create impact, De’Ron layers his experiences of hardship, survival, and growth, creating a vivid narrative that invites readers to witness and reflect on resilience and the journey of relationship with God.

Each stroke of life’s lessons mends broken pieces of his boyhood with the spiritual complexity of human growth, and raw life struggles creating a masterpiece of manhood.

I would recommend Innocence of a Child as a vital tool in classrooms, community panels, and to anyone who struggles with finding their sense of self and purpose.

Every individual and family facing the issue of drug addiction should own this book.

I have never understood the battle with drug addiction like I do now, after reading this book. Mr. Smith shares his story openly and honestly about his addictions and the issues that triggered them. This book is a motivator for all people, no matter what our struggles are, to hold on to faith in God. I have read this book once and am now purchasing it for someone else. This book will make you cry and smile...there are moments where you may do both at the same time. This is a victorious story and proves that no struggle is too hard for God. There is no mountain we cannot overcome. I look forward to more from this author.

      Motivational, Inspirational and Practical

I found the book "Innocence of a Child" by De'Ron Smith to be a very powerful book, filled with hope. To see the journey of a child growing into a young man and how he faced the challenges that were put in front of him was motivational.

De'Ron does a good job of letting his readers get fully engaged and engulfed in both his struggles, as well as his triumphs.

For parents and anyone who works with children, I would highly recommend, "Innocence of a Child." For youth who may be dealing with personal challenges, especially challenges in their home and challenges with addictions, this would be the book that can give them hope.

      Powerful, heartfelt, captivating

Innocence of a Child will captivate you from the beginning. This young man story is very inspiring,

reading what he went through and the challenges he faced and the will to overcome them. His belief kept him strong and to be able to tell his story today is definitely a gift from GOD. If you have or know anyway who has trouble with addiction, this is a must read for them. His story shows that you can overcome whatever you may be facing and be victorious and not a victim in your journey.
